Coldplay Takes Sustainability on Tour

In the aim to be considerate of our environment, Coldplay has strategies to implement sustainability into their tour operations. The best way to show support for sustainability is to apply methods to be sustainable. If the production of a tour can find responsible ways to protect the environment, it shows larger organizations can also adopt these measures. An example of this trend is Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour. Some areas of focus to apply sustainability are reforestation, stage show production, travel logistics, power efficiency, and CO2 reduction.

Reforestation of Yellowstone

With efforts to significantly reduce carbon emissions, Coldplay understands it is not enough. So, they have a focus on conservation and reforestation. Coldplay is supporting Yellowstone by helping the environment with tools to renew and fight climate change. Partnering with Earthpercent, Client Earth, and The Ocean Clean up Coldplay concert sustainability supports outside causes. Ten percent of Coldplay’s earnings go to support environmental projects. Also, One Tree Planted has teamed up to plant a tree for every concert attendee.

Stage Show Production supports Concert Sustainability

In advance, a “sustainability rider” goes to venues to establish the best practices to be sustainable. The show effects and building materials are chosen based on environmental credentials. Also, stages with reusable materials can be recycled or used again on tour. The concert attendees get an LED wristband that is part of the show effects made from 100 percent plant-based materials. Attendees have also been respectful of returning the wristbands 86 percent of the time.

Travel Logistics

Accommodation to use electric vehicles for ground transportation has been central. In flying, the band prefers commercial flights to lower CO2. However, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is used when chartered flights. Coldplay pays a surcharge to use this fuel from recycled cooking oils. This fuel reduces greenhouse gas via air travel by an astounding 80 percent compared to non-SAF.

Concert Sustainability in Power Efficiency

Solar panels, biofuels, and kinetic energy contribute to maximizing power efficiency. Solar panels are in place to charge the show batteries before the band’s arrival. Biofuels, such as recycled cooking oil, lower the production of emissions. As much as 75 percent of transportation emissions are reduced due to diesel fuels.

CO2 Reduction

In the reduction of carbon footprints, food waste makes 20 percent. By using recycled cups, it encourages people to be mindful. When people see the implementation of recycling and lowering the use of water and biofuels, they open up options for changing their lives. Merchandise focuses on using natural fibers or recycled. Also, packaging materials come from recycled materials or compostable bags.
